Prof Dr Gunther Antonissen

Gunther Antonissen graduated from Ghent University, Belgium in 2011. He received a PhD in Veterinary Sciences at Ghent University in 2015, having studied the predisposing effect of the mycotoxins deoxynivalenol and fumonisins on necrotic enteritis in broiler chickens. He holds the European Diplomate status of the European College of Poultry Veterinary Science (ECPVS). Since 2019, Gunther Antonissen is appointed as chairholder of the Chair Poultry Health Sciences at Ghent University.

The large research group led by Prof. Antonissen is conducting extensive multidisciplinary studies in poultry science. Current focus areas include mycotoxins (examining their impact on intestinal health, interactions with infectious diseases, mechanisms of action, and the safety of detoxifying agents), gut health (such as antibiotic alternatives and diagnostic tools), and poultry welfare (monitoring systems and intervention strategies). Gunther Antonissen currently has about 100 scientific papers in international peer-review journals and is a well-known speaker at international events. Furthermore, Gunther is also the initiator and coordinator of the new Postgraduate in Poultry Health Sciences at Ghent University.
