United Kingdom

Prof Ganapathy holds the position of chair/professor in ‘Poultry Infection, Immunity & Vaccinology’ at the University of Liverpool. He has been teaching veterinary and other graduates while undertaking research on poultry respiratory and reproductive pathogens, such as IBV, aMPV, NDV and Mycoplasmas. His research focuses on molecular immunopathogenesis, diagnosis, control and prevention of poultry diseases.

He has supervised several research projects, PhD/MPhil/MSc postgraduates and postdocs. His recent research activities include developing diagnostic methods and vaccines (efficacy testing) for chicken viruses (IBV, aMPV) and mycoplasmas (MG, MS). Recently, we have been exploring RNA and recombinant vaccine technologies. In 2023, he started a £0.77 million BBSRC research project on causes of drops in egg production in UK free-range layer flocks. Prof Ganapathy has several peer-reviewed journal and book chapter publications.

After passing the RCVS statutory examination in 2004, Prof Ganapathy became an RCVS member.  In 2006, he became an RCVS-recognised Specialist in Poultry Medicine & Production, and an EBVS© European Specialist in Poultry Veterinary Science in 2011. He became one of the very few FRCVS in 2022. In the same year, for the first time in the history of RCVS, Prof Ganapathy started the RCVS Certificate in Advance Veterinary Practice for RCVS-registered poultry veterinarians.  He is experienced in poultry practices of both the East and the West, and in developed and developing countries. He has conducted several consultations on various issues related to infectious poultry disease diagnosis, control, and prevention in broiler, layer, and breeder farms in Asia, the Middle East and the UK. He has often been asked to audit wider areas of poultry, including disease investigations, vaccine and vaccination, and farm biosecurity measures.
